Between the stories
The archipelago of Japan consists of many islands. Some people use ferries just like most people use trains and buses. I met many people on ferries on the water of the Seto Inland Sea where about 950 islands lay and of the Tokyo Bay.
When I shot these photographs, I asked these people,
"Why you are on this ferry?"
One girl said,
"I am expecting to meet my boyfriend for the first time in a month."
Another girl said,
"I had broken up with my boyfriend and I am going my home."
These portraits are placed between the past and future.
Stories of these people are expressed on the portraits, and their appearances caught in the photos look nostalgic. Not only the photographer but also anyone who see these photographs would be able to freely imagine preceding and following stories of them.
On the ferry, I am sometimes caught by a sense as if time slows down. For those who use the ferry, the cabin is a space like a resting room located between one story to another. Perhaps, the emptiness of the ferry allows space for the private sentiments of the passengers to be projected.

日本は"島国"と呼ばれており、海に囲まれている。多くの人々が電車やバスを使うように、ある人々はフェリーを使用しなくてはならない。私は950もの島で構成されている瀬戸内海や、東京湾を走るフェリーで人々に出会った。
これらの写真を撮った時、私は彼らに"なぜこのフェリーに乗っているのか？"と尋ねてみた。
ある少女は"私は一ヶ月ぶりに彼氏に会うのを期待している。"と言う。
別の少女は"私は彼氏と分かれて家に帰宅している。"と言った。
これらのポートレイトは過去のストーリーと未来のストーリーの間にある。
それらのストーリーはポートレイト上に現れ、写し撮られた人々の姿は非常にノスタルジーに見える。また、作家自身だけでなくこの作品を鑑賞する全ての人間が、個々の写真から自由に前後の物語を想起することが可能である。
フェリーに乗っていると、そこだけ時間の流れが遅くなったかのような感覚になることがある。フェリーを利用する人々にとって、船内は物語と物語の間にある休憩室のような空間である。そういった隙間のような空間にこそ、プライベートな心情が強く投影されると考える。
